A lot of older homes in the Portsmouth area are still running on 100-amp service. That was fine decades ago, but today's homes are a different story. EV chargers, home offices, HVAC systems, kitchen appliances - it all adds up fast. When the demand outpaces the supply, you start running into tripped breakers, flickering lights, and real safety concerns.

Here's what we were working with on this one - a 100-amp service that needed to be brought up to 200 amps. That meant a new service disconnect, new equipment on the exterior wall, and a new pipe mast running up and over the roofline. The mast is a key piece of the puzzle. It has to extend high enough above the roof to keep the overhead utility wires at a safe, code-compliant clearance. Getting that height right isn't optional - it's required.

The new Siemens 200-amp disconnect is clean, properly wired, and ready to handle the load. On the left, you can see the meter base sitting open next to it - everything organized, with the conductors properly landed and secured. This is the kind of work that has to be done right the first time, because there's no gray area when it comes to your home's main service.

The mast itself runs from the exterior wall straight up through a properly flashed roof penetration and extends well above the ridge. The weatherhead at the top is oriented to keep moisture out of the conduit. It's a detail that matters a lot over time, and one that a lot of people never think about until there's a problem.

A 200-amp service upgrade like this gives a homeowner serious breathing room. More circuits, more capacity, and the ability to add the things modern life actually demands - without worrying about whether the panel can handle it. This is one of the most impactful electrical upgrades you can make to a home, and when it's done to code, it shows.
